bates, lorraine r. - ok literacy sage old books, pomona qld (1999) 2005. 30cm x 21cm. loose leaf. ok literacy is a training course for teachers and school-based tutors who are working with older students. it is designed to extend tutors' knowledge of the special needs of 'older kids' - in particular, those who have been identified as "at risk" in reading.

the course consists of 3 two-hour training sessions -

unit 1 - picking up speed - examines the reading process, identifies reading cues, and guides participants through the steps in "pause, prompt, praise". it provides a step-by-step sequence to help students improve their reading. tutors also learn how reading interviews and running records can give insights into students' particular needs, and includes a checksheet on "what to look for when a student reads to you".

unit 2 - better comprehending - shows tutors how to use cloze exercises in different ways to help students to focus on particular cueing strategies, how to formulate and ask questions which will lead to deeper understanding, and how to conduct a reading conference.

unit 3 - finding information - examines the differences between reading narratives and reading factual texts. the workshop then takes tutors through 'steps for finding information' in a simulation activity which prepares them for helping students to look for, find and organise information from factual texts.

the kit consists of a course leader's handbook with detailed course notes and workshop resource masters, and blackline masters for preparation of participants course book. cost - au$250.00 ask about this complete training course
